Cow, Interrupted

Cow Appropriation, 2023

This video delves into the concept of queerness within the realms of nonconformity, resistance, fluidity, and cultural critique. Here, I employ the term "queerness" to challenge and disrupt conventional assumptions. The film I've chosen as the foundation for this project is "Cow" by Daruish Mehrjui, adapted from a chapter in Gholam Hossein Saedi's book, "Fear and Trembling."

The original movie's storyline revolves around the transformation of the protagonist, Mashahdi Hassan, into a beloved cow due to the fear instilled by the inhabitants of the nearby village of "Boloor." In the film, Mash Hassan's fear is rooted in the prospect of losing his possessions to others. I embarked on this exploration to investigate whether I could utilize "Boloor" as a metaphor for difference, otherness, and queerness – concepts that open doors to change, transformation, chaos, and, in essence, the potential for an alternative world and a different way of existing, which often eludes the majority.
